Student leadership team...

The Refuge will grow or diminish in relation to the quantity and quality of our student leadership team.  To be a healthy, growing Christian, you need to give, not just take.  Because of this, we’ve designed The Refuge to be primarily student run.  That means, we need students to run it.  Not every student has to be a part of this team, but we need a strong, healthy, ministry minded group of students who have a heart for God and a defined passion to see students come to know Christ.  If you’re interested in becoming one of our student leaders, keep reading.

Joining the team...

Let us clarify the requirements for joining our leadership team.  Of course, we would be happy to make exceptions when warranted.  But, we believe it is better to have 10 leaders at 100% rather than 100 leaders at 10% – it’s more effective, more efficient, and more enjoyable.  So we ask that a student leader be:

  1. A Christian.  Not by background or upbringing, but by a personal choice to be in a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  2. A current Mars Hill College student or recent alumni.
  3. Attending or leading one of our D-Groups.  This is a way of ensuring that the student leader is connected to our community and is being spiritually fed and held accountable.
  4. Committed to being an asset to our leadership team – including attending weekly team meetings, volunteering for responsibilities, and, to the best of his/her abilities, carrying out those responsibilities with excellence.
  5. Committed to the vision and mission of The Refuge.  This means that the student leader has read our Vision Statement and feels a sense of intrinsic motivation and ownership.  To read our Vision Statement click here.
  6. Outreach-Minded.  Whether or not the student leader has the gift of evangelism, he/she would have difficulty being committed to our vision without having a heart for reaching out to those who don’t know Christ.  Common sense says that a leader in any organization should feel a sense of pride and ownership and that he/she should be an ambassador for that organization.  In our case, that would involve having a verbal testimony for Christ and inviting others to our services and events.
  7. In agreement with the theological and ethical positions that are typical of a conservative, Evangelical, Christian ministry.  This is said simply in the spirit of protecting our group from insidious and disruptive tactics currently being used against some Christian ministries on other campuses.

With that said, let us point out that the above are simply requirements for joining our student leadership team, not for being involved in The Refuge.  If you don’t fit one of the above requirements or if you simply don’t want to join our leadership team, you are still more than welcome to make The Refuge your home.  We want to be clear here - not being on our leadership team doesn’t mean that we think you are a second-class person at The Refuge.  Not at all!
